THE OPPORTUNITY

Compute can become an export.

New Zealand has traditionally exported physical products. AI creates another possibility—use domestic electricity and infrastructure to process global workloads, then export the resulting compute rather than the electrons themselves.

This opportunity requires investable generation, firm grid capacity, multiple international cable routes, appropriate land, skilled operations and community confidence to develop together.

Exportable Compute is computing capacity produced in New Zealand and sold to offshore users through digital networks.

MARKET STRUCTURE

Two markets are emerging.

01 · AUCKLAND

Sovereign cloud & domestic resilience

Local cloud regions and hyperscale campuses serve data-residency, government, enterprise and latency requirements.

  • Microsoft New Zealand North operating
  • AWS New Zealand Region operating
  • CDC, DCI, NEXTDC and Datacom capacity
02 · SOUTHLAND

Global AI & export-oriented compute

Cool climate, proximity to hydro generation and a proposed South Island cable landing create a different thesis.

  • Datagrid proposed 280 MW AI campus
  • Tasman Ring system under development
  • Potential new generation and grid investment

THE INVESTMENT CASE

Advantages—and dependencies.

01 · ENERGY

Renewable electricity

Renewables supplied 94.5% in Q1 2026. Large new loads still require firm capacity, transmission and dry-year resilience.

02 · LOCATION

Geographic diversification

Remoteness can support jurisdictional resilience, while making international cable diversity essential.

03 · CLIMATE

Cool southern conditions

Southland may reduce cooling demand, but facility PUE and water strategy require independent assessment.

04 · CONNECTIVITY

Multiple cable pathways

Investors need route diversity, resilient landing stations, carrier choice and appropriate latency.

05 · INSTITUTIONS

Stable law and operations

A predictable legal environment supports long-duration infrastructure investment and service delivery.

06 · SYSTEM IMPACT

Demand can reshape the grid

Transpower has modelled data centres adding as much as 5,000 GWh of demand, making sequencing critical.

INVESTOR QUESTIONS

What must be verified?

01Is generation additional, contracted and firm through dry years?
02What grid capacity exists, and when can it be delivered?
03Which cable routes and carriers provide genuine redundancy?
04Are capacity figures operating, committed, consented or aspirational?
05What are the real PUE, water and backup-generation assumptions?
06How are local jobs, rates, land impacts and concerns addressed?
