New Zealand now has two operating hyperscale public-cloud regions, an expanding Auckland data-centre cluster and a new generation of energy-led compute proposals beyond Auckland.
THE FINDING
New Zealand’s physical cloud market has moved beyond enterprise hosting. Microsoft opened its New Zealand region in December 2024; AWS followed with a three-Availability-Zone region in September 2025. Auckland now combines public cloud, sovereign hyperscale campuses and a growing colocation ecosystem.
The next question is geographic. Southland and Taranaki proposals connect compute directly to energy and export infrastructure—but they remain materially less mature than the operating Auckland cluster.

DCI, Datacom, NEXTDC and other operators connect enterprises, carriers and cloud on-ramps without requiring customers to own buildings.
Datagrid Makarewa and the exploratory Stratford concept target far larger loads tied to energy supply and international demand.

CAPACITY DISCIPLINE
Power delivered to customer computing equipment. It excludes at least some cooling and facility overhead and is the clearest disclosed basis for facility comparison.
The potential scale of a site across future stages. Land, grid connection and customer commitments may support only part of it at any one time.
An operator’s combined current and future programme. It can mix operating rooms, buildings under construction and longer-term expansion.
A service geography with resilience and data-residency attributes. Providers usually do not disclose facility locations or electrical capacity.
REGIONAL STRUCTURE
Both public-cloud regions, CDC’s campuses, DCI’s operating footprint, Datacom facilities and NEXTDC’s development concentrate customers, carriers and cloud interconnection. Concentration creates ecosystem depth—but also raises the value of genuinely separate power and network paths.
Datacom’s portfolio demonstrates established enterprise demand outside Auckland. Regional sites support proximity, resilience and regulated workloads, although public capacity disclosure remains uneven.
Large energy-led projects could change the geography of the sector. Their delivery depends on contracted customers, grid works, fibre diversity, capital and staged commissioning—not consent or announcements alone.
